Abriss Atlas is an innovative platform designed to track and document the widespread demolition of buildings across Switzerland. With the construction industry generating approximately 84% of the country's waste and contributing to over a third of its greenhouse gas emissions, the platform aims to shed light on the environmental, urban, and social impacts of these demolitions.
Through the Abriss Atlas platform, users can contribute by identifying demolished, ongoing, or planned demolitions on an interactive map. By zooming into a location or entering an address, users can mark buildings, upload photos, and provide relevant details. Confidential information can also be shared securely to enhance research efforts. All submitted data and images are published on abriss-atlas.ch, creating a transparent and publicly accessible database.
The initiative aims to quantify and analyze demolitions, their causes, and their consequences. Unlike conversions and renovations, demolitions in Switzerland often bypass rigorous permitting processes, leaving significant gaps in public knowledge.
Abriss Atlas empowers individuals to actively participate in addressing the climate crisis, urban transformations, and the excessive generation of construction waste. By documenting and understanding demolition practices, it advocates for more sustainable approaches to urban development.
